In this bucket list poem, I've explored the unfinished business of life—wishes unfulfilled, dreams not realized. I'm sure this theme resonates with many of us.
Somewhere along the way I decided that I might not be able to live up to my own bucket list. And that got me thinking...
Those thoughts then found their way into this poem.
A ship's bell rings
The harbor buoy tolls
Reminding me of what I need to do
A list of buckets, mine all empty
Their sound hollow and tinny
Isn't it better to live like this
Nothing to cross off, nothing to miss
No order to life
I'll play it by ear
Than leave behind a list
Unaccomplished each year
Who will get it upon my demise
And think me a failure before their eyes
Lives unfulfilled, buckets empty
Now teeming to the brim with ashes aplenty
Pour them onto the endless grains of sand
Scatter them into the ocean
Carried on the wind from the land
Specks of life dot the earthly plane
Not such a waste as it begins again

The meaning behind this poem is personal to the reader.
You may see wasted time here. Or freedom from goals. Or acknowledgement that a rich life can be lived in the present moment.
Whatever you find in it becomes part of the poem.
This poem carries a current of discontent, nautical bells tolling time, and the suggestion that emptiness does not exist in a vacuum, rather, it takes on a new form.
It may resonate with those who naturally sidestep popular trends, or those who are drawn to philosophical reflection.
