Canadian Seal Hunt Poem: "Dark Moons"

Content note:
This  poem addresses real harm done to marine animals and includes themes of violence. Some readers may find it difficult to read. The events reflected here are not fictional. There are ongoing efforts to protect marine life and end inhumane practices. You’ll find ways to learn more or take action below, if and when you feel ready.

Years ago when I first saw footage of this barbarous event, it broke my heart. Those feelings translated into this Canadian seal hunt poem. Though changes have been made over the years, they're not nearly enough since this brutal hunt still goes on.

The eyes of a seal have a transcendent quality. When they look at you, it's as though they see into your soul. I had that experience on a dock in Maine where a seal decided to spend an afternoon. We looked into each others' eyes for the longest time. I cannot understand how anyone could club these beautiful sentient beings, especially after making eye contact.

Canadian Seal Hunt Poem

Dark Moons

Eyes like dark moons eclipsed by pain
Snow white land now red with stain
Footsteps crunch over frozen plain
As clubs are raised to crush and slain
Wounded and writhing, they aim again
A final blow as club shatters brain

Lifeless carcasses upon the ice
Dismembered for parts that fetch a price
Designed and fashioned into something nice
From where it comes, will they ever think twice?

Exposing the Canadian Seal Hunt

This older video from HarpSeals.org is difficult to watch, but unfortunately hunts like these are still going on in the present day. There have been significant decreases since the video was made, however more needs to be done so we can put an end to the outdated practices that are causing the needless suffering of seals.

Viewer discretion advised: The following video contains real footage related to the themes of this poem and may be distressing.

Beneath The Surface

There is no interpretation or symbolism here. I wrote this piece as I saw it—without softening it.

This poem is meant to be uncomfortable, as is the stark reality of it.

A Gentle Pause

A moment, if you need it:

  • What stayed with you after reading?
  • Is asking the question "will they ever think twice?" the beginning of the answer?

When You Might Return To This Poem

This is not a poem most would return to lightly.

But perhaps:

  • when there is a need to remember what is often hidden
  • when a disconnect is felt between beauty and truth
