Years ago when I first saw footage of the Canadian seal hunt, it broke my heart. Though changes have been over the years, they are not enough since this brutal hunt still goes on.
The eyes of a seal have a transcendent quality. When they look at you, it's as though they see into your soul. I had that experience on a dock in Maine, where a seal decided to spend an afternoon. We looked into each others' eyes for the longest time. I cannot understand how anyone could club these beautiful sentient beings, especially after making eye contact.
Eyes like dark moons eclipsed by pain
Snow white land now red with stain
Footsteps crunch over frozen plain
As clubs are raised to crush and slain
Wounded and writhing, they aim again
A final blow as club shatters brain
Lifeless carcasses upon the ice
Dismembered for parts that fetch a price
Designed and fashioned into something nice
From where it comes, will they ever think twice?

This older video from HarpSeals.org is difficult to watch, but unfortunately hunts like these are still going on in the present day. There have been significant decreases since the video was made, however more needs to be done so we can put an end to the outdated practices that are causing seals to needlessly suffer.
Please be warned that this video contains graphic scenes from a seal hunt.
