I have always been drawn to the sea. It moves me in ways I don't fully understand, but move me it does. The roar of crashing waves, the low hiss as they ebb back out to sea, rushing, salty wind dancing around my skin—sea poetry penned by nature. A feast for the senses like no other. It pulls me like a current, my emotions turning like the tide—high and low, agonist and antagonist.
One way to capture these sensations is to write. In imagery I see words, and in words I see imagery. The words that swim through the depths of my thoughts don't always rise to the surface. Yet, in this sea of overwhelming sensation, try I must.
My name is Aerwyna, part-time mermaid, poet, and storyteller (or so I'd like to think). A woman with a sea soul, who very likely shares this same spirit with you. And like the ocean itself, our moods and emotions change from dark and stormy tidal waves of sadness and tropical depression, to the calm in the eye of a hurricane, and the awe of a sunrise at sea so beautiful it makes one ache. My original poetry tries to capture all of these things.
Along with these reflections, a recurring theme of mine is celebrating one's uniqueness. It's incredibly difficult to navigate in a world that often encourages the opposite. You'll find poetry here that empowers you, urging you to be yourself and follow your inner compass.
I have great admiration for the courageous souls who follow their dreams by taking on the sea—those who sail around the world, either to set records or heed the inner call of adventure, divers, explorers—all who feel the fear yet follow their passion anyway are celebrated here in verse.
As much as I love the sea, I can't turn a blind eye to its suffering. It saddens me greatly to see marine life entangled in plastic, poisoned by toxins and pollutants, or savagely hunted for sport. As a mermaid of sorts, it's my duty to raise awareness through my poetry about healing our seas and protecting its inhabitants. So among love poems, darker musings, and shades of whimsy, you'll also find pieces that highlight these important issues.
Thank you for joining me on this journey through words inspired by the sea. May they empower you as they have empowered me. Let's continue to be friends of the ocean together.
