Mermaid Poem About Inner Strength: "If I Were A Mermaid"

This contemplative mermaid poem about inner strength invites reflection on transcending your circumstances through transformation. A mermaid's existence appears to be unencumbered because of the sheer vastness of the sea, yet couldn't your own life be similar?  Unresolved matters anchor us down, preventing our fullest expression.

Imagine yourself as a mermaid with all of the attributes you would like to embody, and know that they already exist within you. Don't wait for that perfect "someday." Go for your dreams today!

Mermaid Poem About Inner Strength

If I Were A Mermaid

If I were a mermaid I would know within me
Lies a power and a force as big as the sea
I would dive where the bottom is smooth and clear
Knowing that I'd find safety here
If I lose my way I would follow the tides
And change course until confusion subsides

If I were a mermaid I would know what to do
Life's frustrations would not throw me askew
Turbulent currents would not alter my plans
My track I would follow through shifting sands
I'd stick to my purpose and reach my goals
As easily as swimming onto shallow shoals

If I were a mermaid I would like myself
And dust off the dreams that I've stored on a shelf
Others' opinions would no longer build like a dam
Holding me back from doing all that I can
I would burst forth like a river in pursuit of the sea
And become the best version of who I want to be

If I were a mermaid I would hold the key
To unlock the treasures buried deep within me

Take A Moment To Reflect

Beneath The Surface

This poem, like many others, is very personal to me. It may be entirely different for you.

You may see empowerment here. Or lack of confidence. Or a mingling of both emotions coursing through your life at the same time.

Whatever you find in it becomes part of the poem.

The Feeling Of This Poem

This poem carries honest self-evaluation, mermaid metaphor, and the hopeful realization that change occurs from the inside out.

It may resonate with those who are looking to be more self-assured, as well as those who need a gentle reminder that they can become all they wish to be.

A Quiet Pause

If you'd like to linger a little longer:

  • Which image stayed with you?
  • If you were a mermaid, how would you be different?
  • What gives birth to the turbulent currents in your life?
  • What treasures are buried within you?
  • Are there any dams holding you back?

When You Might Return To This Poem

You might reach for this poem:

  • when contemplating a change in your life that others might not agree with
  • when you feel somewhat lost and off course
  • when you need a reminder that your dreams are worth going after because they make you who you are
