This sea captain mermaid poem evokes tales of seafaring lore on the Seven Seas. One can only imagine what it was like on a wooden sailing ship navigating by the stars, the smell of sea-soaked rope and planks, a captain shouting orders to his crew.
I've always been drawn to the mystique and nostalgia of days of yore, especially on the high seas.
Salty maidens come hither with your wine
And bring me a cask of your finest brine
Upon which I'll steer me ship and me sails
The Seven Seas I'll navigate with me bow at your tails
'Tis a mighty ship of fools that refuses to sea
A maiden of the deep surrounding thee
Long guiding mariners while submerged in stealth
To a captain she is the sea herself

A seasoned captain maneuvers the ocean as if it's a living, breathing, tempestuous entity. A mermaid is the perfect embodiment of this. You may see it differently.
You might see folkloric fantasy here. Or realism. Or a marriage of the two.
Whatever you find in it becomes part of the poem.
